Wanna play a fun game inspired by 1930s rubber hose cartoons about a detective mouse with guns? Well, IGN thinks not worth it- it’s too much CHEESE for their tastes.
Recently, IGN reviewed a brand new, unique first-person shooter game called Mouse; PI for Hire, yet part of its review got a low bar due to a ridiculously outrageous reason.
For context, Mouse; Pi for Hire is a first person shooter game where its animation is inspired by 1930s rubber hose hand drawn animation. You play as Jack Pepper, a mouse detective in the city of Mouseberg, where you need to find the cause for the disappearance of several Shrew residences. You travel around Mouseberg, fighting other mice and rats, getting new weapons and upgrades from your engineer friend Tammy, and learn more and more of the cause of all the Shrews disappearing. While playing, you can unlock new weapons like acid bombs and grenades, fight bosses and enemies from buff mice to a crocodile with a gatling gun, and hear tons, and tons, AND TONS of cheese jokes.
This game really turns the tide of what people think of first person shooter games these days, since most games are set in some type of futuristic timeline, yet this game is sent in the past and embraces the old art style of cartoons at that time. It really gives a feel for many old animation styles, bearing resemblance to games like Cuphead or Bendy and the Ink Machine.
Yet, for IGN, despite the game’s great art style and crocodile with a gatling gun, the game only received a 6/10 review. Unlike other game ratings, like GameSpot giving an 8/10 and Destructoid giving it a 9.5/10, it’s seen as the lowest rating out of the other companies. When asked why the game got such a low review, they claimed, “There were too many cheese jokes.” Cheese jokes? In a game revolving around rats, mice, and Shrews? Not only is this reason absurd, but it’s very clear from the very beginning that the game is centered around rats and mice, and a main stereotype of rats is that they love cheese. The internet went ballistic, saying that it’s a very stupid reason and not worth knocking down 4 points of the review. The company received a lot of backlash for their review, yet still hasn’t made any response to it. I’m still unaware whether IGN is going to respond or ignore the paparazzi of the public.
