FROM 2/20/26
Spike Chunsoft just released the announcement of the upcoming reboot of one of their most popular and beloved game series, Danganronpa 2X2. On September 12th, 2025, during a casual Nintendo direct, they shocked millions of fans with a look at the new, revamped, alternate, version of Danganronpa 2, Danganronpa 2X2. The trailer showed an updated version of the original version, which was released on July 16th in 2012, with better quality graphics, new sprites and character animation, and more, while still keeping the feel and flow of its original version.
Danganronpa itself is a single player murder mystery game where the player is trapped in a certain setting, like a school, island, or academy, with other students, known as ultimates. Their headmaster, Monokuma, a robotic black and white bear, says the only way to leave is to get away with murder of a fellow classmate. After every murder, the player gets time to look over the crime scene before a Class Trial is held, where the player and other surviving students have to find the murder. If they guess correctly, then only the culprit gets punished; if they guess wrong, everyone besides the culprit gets punished, and the culprit gets to leave the game and be the winner.
The game is very unique due to its blending of murder mystery, reality, and inner battles between hope and despair. Every trial gives the player a motivation to move on, not just because it’s part of the game, but it’s to help the memories of the death live on through the living. Every ending trial, usually the 6th, reveals the Mastermind, the one who’s in charge of the killing games- usually Junko Enoshima. It also reveals a sort of major plot twist, like the world being in ruin, revealing you were the mastermind all along, or that everything about the game itself is a lie. It’s those moments that make the game stand out, since no matter how much the mastermind tries to put you in despair, you still go on with hope.
The moment the fandom discovered of 2X2’s release, the hype was immense. People started making speculations, making guesses on who would live and who would fall, and even tried to decipher the new plot only through one trailer. The community can’t help but fall in love with the games’ unique cast of characters, drama, animations, and the game itself. Ever since the 2010s, the game was one of the biggest game series to hit the internet.
From what was seen in the direct, 2X2 is said to keep the original flow and beat of Danganronpa 2, yet with a twist of an alternate storyline, like a ‘what if?’ kind of game. New victims, new culprits, new punishments, and new animations for sprites were already confirmed. The fandom has developed high expectations and hope their beloved series is able to rise from the dust, as 2X2 has some pretty big shoes to fill in the Danganronpa community.
