On Saturday, April 25th, an armed man ran through security and fired shots outside a black-tie gala. It had taken place at the White House Correspondent’s Association dinner at the Washington Hilton and had more than 2500 people present who could have been killed. Some of these individuals were very important political figures, including Donald Trump, the president of the United States. Prosecutors say the man, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance California, took a train from where he lives in Los Angeles to the capital to attempt to assassinate the president. He was carrying a pump-action shotgun, .38-caliber handgun, and 3 knives. The man was able to run past a security checkpoint, but was quickly apprehended right before reaching the stairs that led down to the dinner. No one in the ballroom was injured- except for the Secret Service agent who took a bullet but only had minor injuries due to his bullet-proof vest absorbing most of the impact.
Retired ATF agent Jim Cavanaugh said, “The thing that’s concerning is let’s say this is not this feckless hapless boob who is trying to do this.” He added, “It’s half a dozen suicide fanatics from the Iranian Revolutionary guard or ISIS-K, and they check in with submachine guns and hand grenades.” The White House will hold a meeting with the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security leadership “early this week” to review the attack and protocols for major events where the president is at risk of potential danger.
Cole Allen had written an email to his family before the attack about the little difficulty of bringing weapons into a hotel nearby. “I walk in with multiple weapons and not a single person there considers the possibility that I could be a threat,” Allen wrote. Anthony Cangelosi, a retired Secret Service agent, talks about how the Secret Service did everything they could to protect the event but how it is challenging to secure events in large, multi-use buildings like hotels. “While the Secret Service can make some alterations to the normal flow of business at a hotel during security events, there are limitations,” he said.
While investigating Cole Allen and his possible intentions, the authorities had found accounts linked to him, which seem to shift in recent years from video games to anger about politics and political figures. Some posts and electronic devices that were confiscated as evidence show that Cole Allen had a clear hostility towards the Trump Administration and their actions. Multiple accounts of his on X, Bluesky, and other social media platforms often go by the name “coldForce,” “CForce3000,” or some variation of those; these accounts, most of which have been taken offline, talk harshly about the Trump Administration. “Everyone already knows Trump is a fucking awful person in multiple dimensions and no one has done shit,” he wrote on his Bluesky account. This reveals his hateful bias towards Trump and his administration which could be a possible reason for his attempt to assassinate the president.
