Cole Tomas Allen was the man charged in the shooting at White House correspondents dinner; he was a gamer who would post videos of him playing video games, but, over the years, his posts have evolved and have been about his outrage towards Donald Trump over his first term in office and now his second term in office. In social media posts, Allen has compared Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler for his cruelty. A post that Allen wrote in the beginning of March said, “Put a traitor BACK in office, get treason like, I don’t understand why people are surprised by the U.S ripping itself apart. I’m pretty sure that’s the expected outcome of having a traitor at the helm.” 

In another post, Allen wrote that he was able to smuggle a gun into the dinner. A copy of the message was shared with NBC News by a senior administration official. In the post it says, “I walk in with multiple weapons and not a single person there considers the possibility that I could be a threat. The security at the event is all outside, focused on protesters and current arrivals, because apparently no one thought about what happens if someone checks in a day before.” So, he was able to break into the dinner the night before, and the security didn’t even check him because he wasn’t a person of interest, since he was not a protester or a new arrival. His success in smuggling in a weapon reflects the security of the place and their apparent lack of professionalism. 

Trump talks about how he “wasn’t worried” about the shooting, even though it was an attempt at his own assassination. Trump also talks about what happened to him and what procedures he had to take to stay safe. In Trump’s quote, he said, “I was standing up – pretty much. I was standing up and then turned around the opposite direction and pretty much walking out pretty tall, a little bent over because they – you know, I’m not looking to be standing too tall. And – but I was walking out. I was pretty – about halfway there when they said, ‘Please go down to the floor. Please go down to the floor.’ So I dropped to the floor. So did the first lady.” Donald Trump recalled what happened and how security rushed him down to the floor for his and the first lady’s safety. All in all, Cole Tomas Allen seems unapologetic and Donald Trump seems unconcerned at his attempted assassination.
