2/6/26
A very powerful bomb cyclone will hit the East Coast of the United States, along with parts of North and South Carolina and Southern Virginia, which are also expected to be hit by the storm.
The rest of the east coast will also take a big hit, including more inner parts like West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Western Maine. Most of New Hampshire and Vermont will not be hit as hard, but will still experience some bad weather. Bomb cyclones are formed through a process called bombogenesis. Bombogenesis is when a storm’s pressure drops to 24 millibars, a way of measuring pressure, in 24 hours. This happens when a cold air mass clashes with a warm air mass, like the air over most oceans.
Bomb cyclones normally form in late Fall to early Spring, and they’re usually over the Northwestern Atlantic and Northwestern Pacific, even sometimes over the Mediterranean Sea. Bomb cyclones are similar to other air-based natural disasters like hurricanes, but it is not quite the same. Despite the two forming at different times of the year, they also form through very different methods and environments. For example, cold air weakens hurricanes compared to bomb cyclones that become stronger and more dangerous. Another example is when they form in different areas; hurricanes develop in tropical waters, while bomb cyclones develop in colder waters.
This is not America’s first time with a very bad bomb cyclone. Back in 2018, the U.S. got hit with a very bad bomb cyclone, where it had reached speeds of 89-90 miles per hour. It also had record breaking floods, tons of power outages, and over 1 billion dollars in damages. Additionally, thousands of flights had to be canceled because of the storm, and many schools closed down for several days. On the other hand, some had to evacuate their area because of how hard the storm hit them. Many can expect a similar thing happening with the current storm, although it will luckily be at a lower scale than the storm in 2018, with heavy snow and lots of ice on the roads. There will also be very strong winds and potential flooding that could possibly damage buildings. Along with the possibility that trees could explode due to the moisture in them being frozen over and then expanding, resulting in them building up with lots of pressure before exploding.
There are a lot of things you should do to prepare for this storm if you are in the affected areas. You should stay off the roads to avoid accidents on the roads and stay inside to avoid potentially dangerous winds and cold, preparing power banks and making sure to keep all your electronics charged in case of a possible power outage, and keeping a shelf of stable food in case some of your food goes bad from the outage. Lastly, stocking up on gas for your car in case gas stations close is good, as well, and stocking up on warm clothes for the cold. The storm will pass over after a few days, so stay safe and prepare yourself with necessities.
