The flooding in Hawaii started with the storm on March 13, 2026. This storm caused Hawaii to have flash flood warnings all over the islands. The second storm hit March 20, 2026, causing more damages to the island; it was also estimated that it dumped about 61 inches of rain. The storm hit islands like Oahu’s, Wailua Kona and Haleiwa. Some of the islands recorded 3.5 and 6.5 inches of rain during the storms. These islands had major damage done to them due to the storms and flooding.
400 homes were destroyed from the Hawaii flooding. It is estimated that the flood damages will coast up to about $1 billion. It was stated by many that destruction on this level has not been seen here in almost 20 years. There were many farms and pieces of farmland being destroyed because of the storm. Thomas Giambelluca told the people of Hawaii that is “building the mesonet to serve multiple purposes, including research, resource management, support for farmers and ranchers, and others.” This natural disaster did not just cause property damages, also causing displacement for many.
It’s estimated that thousands of people had to be evacuated from their homes due to the flooding. It’s also estimated that hundreds of people had to be resettled from their homes. Luckily, there were no reported deaths caused by the natural disaster in Hawaii. A big concern is that the flood waters are carrying diseases and illness onto the islands. Another concern is what the future of Hawaii is going to look like after all the damages. Green said at a news conference, “This is going to have a very serious consequence for us as a state.”
One major issue that the flooding is causing is extra runoff all over the islands. People are also worried about the environmental impact that this flooding will cause to the habitats and animals. The biggest consumer is the resource that Hawaii is left with from the flooding because of the lack of farms, food, and a way to import resources. The UH Water Resources Research Center stated, “providing data when and where it is most needed before and during extreme events like floods and wildfires, might be its most important purpose. Mesonet data will make us better prepared for future events by improving weather forecasts and enabling emergency managers to plan for and respond to extremes.”
