During the night of June 20, 2025, in a town called Enderlin, there were a total of 22 different twisters/tornadoes.
One tornado was able to become an EF5, ending the EF5 drought after 12 years; but it was originally an EF3. as reports said. Sadly, 3 people lost their lives that night.
Now, there are 6 levels to a tornado: EF0, which is 65-85 mph and minor roof damage, like shingle loss; EF1 is 86-110 mph, can tear shingles off and cause major roof damage to frame houses, and have tree branches snapping; EF2 is 111-135 mph and have roofs often torn off many houses and trees bending; EF3 is 136-165 mph, with roofs and walls torn off well-built homes and most trees uprooted or snapped; and EF4 and EF5 are 166+ mph, with complete destruction of most structures: roofs and walls gone, trees uprooted, cars and trucks getting, and getting lifted up.
Now, the Enderlin tornado, at its largest, was 1.05 miles and carved a path across the prairie for just over 12 miles. Meteorologists from the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks estimated the tornado’s winds reached 210 mph. The twister destroyed farmsteads and tipped over fully-loaded rail cars; most were fully filled with grain and a fully loaded grain hopper car, which weighs between 263,000 pounds and 286,000 pounds or 131.5 tons and 143 tons. They were able to fall over and move around 50 feet from the tornado; one tanker car was even thrown 475 feet. The tornado lasted around 20 minutes from when it touched down onto the ground at 11:02 pm to 11:21 pm, when it finally dissipated.
