A shooting in central New Jersey hurt many and harmed a lot.
November 18 was a normal day, being a chilly day for many people; it looked like just another day. Manville was doing testing but nearby in Hillsborough a new danger was up in coming. On the afternoon of November 18, the Hillsborough police were called to the local Chipotle to respond about gunshots outside. The area the gunshots were heard were 649 route 206 near Hillsborough, centre south of Amwell Road. When the police got there, they started talking to eyewitness, who told the officers they saw shooting and started giving descriptions. The eyewitness said the alleged shooter took a male victim on foot and started fleeing before the police got there.
The police officers started securing the crime scene and established a perimeter while searching for the individuals involved; as a precaution, the school areas were placed in secure hold and nearby residents and businesses were told to lock their doors and keep a watch out.
‘’It’s critical to clarify that the shooting didn’t happen on any school or ground within the surrounding township,’’ said superintendent Michael Vople. Later, the investigators found the shooter. The lockdown was lifted at around 3:15, and students were able to go home, but any sports or after school activities were cancelled. Parents had to come to the school and pick their children up. Later, the police found the 19-year old victim, who wasn’t injured, and the victim told the police about how the shooter was heading to the police department to turn himself in.
The shooter was identified as Jeter, and a superior court warrant was given for his home, but he wasn’t there. Around 5:56, Jeter was at the police department turning himself in without hurting anyone. Jeter was put into Somerset county jail pending the hearing on the matter; once Jeter was inside, the hands of the police, all alarms were off. At 6:05, the police department told the township that the shooter was in their hands and there wasn’t a danger or threat to the community.
As of now we, have heard that the shooter has been charged with attempted murder and charged with allegedly firing shots at a person in the parking lot of the Hillsborough centre shopping area on route 206. Someone charged with attempted murder can spend 2 to 3 years in prison. For what we’ve been told, Jeter was not well and was going through a lot when that happened. Now, thankfully, the streets of Hillsborough are safe, and the police do hope it doesn’t again.
