“We’re in a time right now where the world is really, really bad and really dark and people need empathy and help more than kind of ever, especially in our country. I’d say if you have money, it would be great to use it for good things and maybe give it to some people that need it,” Eilish began.

“Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but, yeah, give your money away, shorties,” Eilish finished. 

This speech has circled the internet, gaining lots of mixed reactions. Some people think what Billie Eilish did was brave, since billionaires such as Mark Zuckerberg and George Lucas were in the audience, and praised her for it. Many have pointed out that $11.5 million is about a quarter of Eilish’s net worth, deeming her donation as generous and a representation of Billie’s kind and proactive character. Her donation will be going to organizations that promote climate justice, food equity, and reducing carbon pollution. 

However, some people have had a negative take on Billie Eilish’s speech and donation. They question how she chose to deliver the speech, finding it disrespectful that she presented the speech right in front of those she was calling out or “targeting.” These people also complained that since the donation was coming out of the profits from her recent Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, that she was not donating directly from her net worth, making her donation and speech invalid.
