French President Emmanuel Macron gave a speech at France’s Ile Longue nuclear submarine base, coming after the launch of US and Israeli attacks against Iran in a campaign that risks establishing the Middle East. France will unveil how it could use the European Union’s only atomic arsenal to protect the continent. France maintains the world’s fourth largest nuclear arsenal, estimated at around 290 warheads. Britain, which is no longer a member of the EU, is the only other European nuclear power.
Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that France would, for the first time, allow the development of its nuclear–armed aircraft to allied countries in a nuclear strategy aimed at strengthening Europe’s independence. According to richmond-news.com, “Marcon said the new posture provides for temporary deployment of elements of our strategic air forces to allied countries. Even though Macron said there would be no sharing of decision-making with any other nation regarding the use of Nuclear weapons.”
Macron’s address on all of them could also spark a backlash ahead of the 2027 election, in which Marine Le Pen’s, the deputy of the French National Assembly, is seen as having its best chance yet of winning a top job. US officials believe that Washington’s deterrent would continue to cover Europe. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was created in 1949 to guarantee the freedom and security of its members in Europe and North America. This alliance has done nothing about European fears under President Donald Trump. Do you believe that by including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization they are able to help solve this issue?
