On January 9th, 2026, Australia was experiencing very strong winds and heatwaves, which destroyed multiple buildings. The fires were known to be the worst since 2020, most of them caused by lightning. The area that this happened in was Victoria, Australia.
People were greatly impacted by these fires. Their homes were burned to a crisp and some people even lost their lives. According to a Seattle Times article, “Wildfires in the Australian state of Victoria have killed at least one person, destroyed dozens of homes, and burned nearly 900,000 acres since last week.” Businesses were also affected, with about 80% of businesses were destroyed.
Australia has had a long history of wildfires ranging from 1851 to 2026. In 2020, there were 9,360 alerts for fires and in 2019 before that there were 4 times that amount.
This country is also most known for their wildlife, particularly the variety of animals that live there. The natural habitats of Koalas were destroyed because all the trees were burned to a crisp. The animals that are in national parks had nowhere to go after the fires because that’s the only place that they grew up living.
The reason that Australia is experiencing all of these fires is because of the random climate changes and the amount of heat waves that they are having. Australia also had some bad storms, which caused lightning strikes, causing the fires, as well. There has been a lack of rain, especially during Australia’s most known season for fires.
People have been pretty lost on how to prevent these fires from happening. Some authorities have been trying to control what the builders use to build the houses so that they don’t burn down as easily.
As of today, the Prime Minister of Australia said, “The fact that we have at one time floods in one area, fires in another, and heat waves, means there is a cost of the changing weather patterns that we are seeing.”
