There has been a long conflict regarding the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. After over 30 years, they have finally agreed to sign a peace deal. This peace deal is intended to end the long-running conflict between the regions. This deal is being hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. Ahead of this peace deal, there has been a rise in fighting in the resource-rich Eastern Congo. Congo’s army said that the rivals were attempting to corrupt the peace process.
M23 rebels reported that the army had launched a breach of ceasefire. At the beginning of 2025, M23 took large parts of the Eastern Congo and cease fire, since that had killed thousands and forced many more from their homes. This shows that a certain level of trust isn’t apparent there. The regions aren’t playing fair, and it is causing problems between the people and the summit.
According to reporters, Trump repeatedly mispronounced the names of both Central African presidents. Trump said, “I have a lot of confidence in both leaders. We’ll keep these commitments. I know they’re going to keep them and follow through on the agreement and create a much brighter future for the people of their countries.” In June, Trump got the two countries’ ministers to sign a peace treaty, saying that it was a “glorious triumph.”
Many other African leaders attended the peace ceremony, like Kenya, Angola, Burundi and Togo. The vice-president of Uganda also attended this important matter of the DR of Congo and Rwanda.
