UConn, a well-known college, has an undefeated women’s basketball team. This is the 23rd time UConn earned the No. 1 seed. They competed in every NCAA Tournament since the 1988-89 season. UConn has 24 final fours and 12 national championships. This program is undefeated for the 10th time this season; they won the BIG East Conference tournament last week.
As they got into March Madness, UConn lost three times after finishing the season undefeated. The first time was in 1997, when they were 33-0 but lost to Tennessee. Then, in 2017-18, they lost in overtime twice by buzzer-beaters. The Huskies have a reputation of struggling under pressure every time. Even though Uconn is good, they still lost many key players; even though throughout the seasons they lost players, they still gained good players and were able to keep having a good team no matter what players they lost.
UConn has many big accomplishments. Including the 2 longest winning streaks with one season winning 111 games and another season winning 90 games all in a row. They have 6 undefeated seasons. Also been in the final fours 14 consecutive times and they have 24 final four appearances. They maintained the longest active streak of NCAA Tournament since 1989.
The women’s team has had many key players on the team that ended up going to the WNBA. They had 14 AP national players of the year. Nine players won best female college athletes. ESPN says, “UConn was producing 38 WNBA draft picks over the seasons.”
Some key players this year include, Azzi Fudd, Sarah Strong, KK Arnold, Ashlynn Shade, and Serah Williams. Other players that play in the games are Jana El Alfy, Morgan Cheli, and Allie Ziebell. The team has great chemistry overall and always has each others’ backs, on and off the court. Their bond has many fans rooting for them during March Madness, hoping that UConn can bring home the trophy again this year, making it their 13th National Championship.
Their head coach, Geno Auriemma, is the one leading the program and coaching the women’s team. He is the man that led them to so many championships and was able to make all the girls he had on his team the greatest athletes in basketball. Even though he faced many problems and disappointments, he never gave up on his team or the girls and is determined to be the greatest team in college women’s basketball. He will do anything in his power to be a part of the amazing team he is today and has been at UConn since 1985. His dedication to UConn and the team is a clear show on how much he wants his players to succeed and become the best version of themselves when it comes to basketball. This man has never judged any of his players in a bad way and has an amazing bond with all the girls. The humor and laughter on the team shows how good their chemistry is, and when you have good chemistry with your teammates, that’s how you know you are a good team and will win games.
