The University of Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team has once again added another victory to their 12-time legacy of the most dominant women’s basketball program in NCAA history. Huskies are the all time Uconn Mascot. NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association, which is a nonprofit organization that regulates and runs college athletics like Division I, Division II, and Division III in the United States. The University of Connecticut plays all sports in a Division I league.
The Uconn women huskies entered the 2024-25 basketball season with high expectations from head coach, Geno Auriemma who have led Uconn overall to 12 national wins. Not only did theire coach lead and guide them through the wins, but so did the players. They went undefeated, 23-0, the entire Big East Conference 2024-2025 season and were the number one seed in the March Madness Bracket. March Madness is the nickname for the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournament and the annual NCAA college basketball tournament (only Division I), generally throughout the month of March.
Paige Bueckers (Redshirt Senior Guard), Azzi Fudd (Senior Guard), Sarah Strong (Freshman Forward), Kaitlyn Chen (Junior Guard), and Ashlynn Shade (Sophomore Forward) were all dominant on the court with unmatched team chemistry and determination. Bueckers had a standout year after coming back from an ACL tear injury, averaging 22 points per game. Also returning from an ACL injury, Fudd was averaging 13 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist per game. She earned the title of Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Tournament, scoring 24 points in the championship game. Although she is a freshman, Strong averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. She also had game round steals and blocks. Kaitlyn Chen was consistent in her playmaking, sharp shooting, and game IQ, she contributed heavily to the team.
In the 2025 WNBA Draft, Paige Bueckers was selected as the first overall pick by the Dallas Wings. Aaliyah Edwards, who is one of the two Uconn standouts, was selected as the 6th pick by the Washington Mystics. During her time at UConn, she accumulated over 1,800 points and 1,000 rebounds, earning WBCA and Wooden All-American honors in 2024.
