A new season also means a new start for sports, and Manville seems to be ready for all sports this year! With around 105 sign ups for Spring Track, new members for the Golf team, and great new starters for the Softball and Baseball team, MHS would like to gladly introduce us to these four spring sports.
Golf was a sport that began in Manville High School back in the late 1900s up until the sport was called off in 1997, when the administration decided to stop offering the school this sport. Carl Ruffer, a 2nd grade teacher and Golf’s now-assistant coach for the team, was on the team the year it was signed off into no longer being a Manville spring sport. Last year, the Golf team was brought back by Dr. Maroun, the superintendent of MHS. The Golf team only needs a minimum of 4 players to contract a team, which is perfect for our small school. This year, there are currently 7 players on the team: 5 sophomores and 2 recently recruited freshmen. Their first conference will take place at Spooky Brooks against Voorhees on March 25th, 2025.
Next we have softball and baseball teams, which have weekly practices from 3:00-5:30 PM. There are currently 17 girls on the Softball team and a new head coach, Bill Sperduto, along with assistant coaches Dawn Vornlocker (third year) and Kelsey Schuster (second year). They have 4 seniors: Isabella Gallegos, Jailyn Murillo, Angelina Piaz, and Jah’nya Smith-Theodore. Their first game will take place on March 28th, at 4:00 PM. For the baseball team, their first game will take place March 29th at 10:30AM against Rutgers Prep. There are no seniors on the team, but there are three newly recruited members: Benjamin Canuso, Tyler Johnson, and Aidan Johnson, who are all freshmen.
Spring Track and Field has the biggest group of kids so far this semester; with over 100 kids signing up, the coaches are thrilled to begin this year with so many new students. Their first meet will take place on March 25th in Watchung Hills at 4:00 PM.
We are so glad to have so many people join spring sports. Whether it is Golf, Baseball, Softball, or Spring Track and Field, Manville hopes to show up with new records and great wins as more people join these spring sports!
