The pope, a figure beloved to many, has been confirmed to be bedridden at the hospital since February 14th. The pope reported having extreme difficulties breathing for several days. He went into the hospital, initially being treated for bronchitis; however, after further investigation by medical professionals, it was determined he was suffering from pneumonia in both of his lungs. The pope’s condition is considered critical, and has many people worried for his well being and general health. The pope is eighty-eight years old, leaving his body weaker and less efficient when it comes to fighting off bacteria and disease.
Pope Francis was elected to be the pope in 2013 after his predecessor, Pope Benedict the Sixteenth, retired. He has been the pope for roughly 12 years. Throughout this time, he has been a voice for human rights, equality, climate change, and universal unity. He is a firm believer in rights for women, relating to things such as sexuality, gender identity, and general rights. With so many positive changes to the world, the pope has garnered massive respect from many people.
Many people have comments on the pope’s current physical state. There have been reported gatherings at churches, including many prayers, candles, and connections. The pope’s family have also expressed extreme concern. They spoke out about everything Pope Francis has accomplished over his career as a pope. From human rights to addressing climate issues, they explain, teary-eyed, how much love they have for Pope Francis and everything he has done for the community.
In the unfortunate and harsh reality where Pope Francis succumbed to his physical deterioration and passed, there will be a strict protocol to follow for his death ceremony. His funeral must be held 4-6 days after his potential passing. The church then participates in nine days of mourning. This includes praying for the pope and his trip to heaven. Many groups and churches will gather; communities will come together. Everyone religious will participate in mourning and appreciating the life of Pope Francis. Popes are typically buried in St. Peter’s Basilica; however, if they request it, they can be buried in a separate location. After the mourning is over, the election process will start. This process is not lengthy, and the cardinals vote on an anonymous ballot. They do this twice until there is a two of three thirds of the vote in favor towards a candidate.
Overall, the unfortunate state of Pope Francis is concerning many religious people. There is hope he will recover, but, in the unfortunate event he does not, communities will be brought together through prayer and ceremony.
