Looking for a K-Drama to watch this year? Look no further: Melo Movie came out on February 14, 2025. Parasite’s Choi Woo-Shik and Daily Dose of Sunshine’s Park Bo-Young join forces in a Valentine’s Day romance for cineastes. Choi plays Ko Gyeom, a movie buff turned critic who crosses paths with Park’s Kim Mu-bee, a director who enters the film industry out of a love-hate relationship with her father after years apart. Helming the production is director Oh Choong-hwan, who has brought shows like Hotel de Luna (2019) and Start-Up (2020). Melo Movie will begin streaming on Netflix on Feb. 14.
Choi Woo-Shik’s international recognition comes from his role as the Kim family son in Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite. He also played significant roles in Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie horror Train to Busan and Bong Joon-ho’s benign-monster film Okja. To his filmography, his work in the series Our Beloved Summer also carries a lot of weight.
South Korean actress, Park Bo-young, plays the role of Kim Mubee, the defiant female protagonist of Melo Movie. Park Bo-young’s role in the recent Light Shop has attracted considerable attention. She recently starred in the Korean dystopian thriller film, Concrete Utopia, which even made some buzz at the Oscars.
In the movie, Ko Gyeom’s passion for films dates back to when he was merely 9 years of age. A cinephile through and through, has a unique desire to watch every last film in every country. This film critic reunites with an aspiring director after years apart due to a mysterious event. Their reunion triggers buried memories and emotions, leading them to confront their shared past. Melo Movie delves into loneliness, loss, and love, curbing the romance in favor of something more real. As we follow four artists in their struggles to survive creative work, heartbreak, and tragedy, the drama does out hurt and healing in equal measure — reminding us that there’s more than one way to have a happy ending.
Part of the reason why the narrative is made to build up through the ten episodes is also the painstaking exploration of the motley of characters that populate the narrative. There are multiple strands of love, not just restricted to romantic union. Melo Movie is also a variation of the romantic subgenre of enemies to lovers. With their charming screen presence and undeniable acting skills, Choi Woo-shik and Park Bo-young have each carved out impressive careers in both film and television. And the pair had nothing but praise for each other, sharing their positive experiences while working on the project during a virtual interview with ABS-CBN News.
“I had always wanted to work with someone that I deemed to be a good person and I think that was exactly the case,” Woo-shik said. “The fact that I got to work alongside Bo-young, it was a lot of fun and I was very happy.”
Meanwhile, Bo-young recalled, “I had always wanted to work with Woo-shik and when we started working together, I realized that he is so much more charming than what I had ever expected.”
