Hunter Schafer, famously known for her performance as Jules in Euphoria, is a 26 year old actress and model. She is featured in movies and shows such as Cuckoo and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Recently, she went to get a new passport, and she noticed that her gender marker had been changed from female to male. As a trans woman, she was shocked. In order to spread awareness, she posted a video on TikTok to shine light on the situation. 

She expressed that her gender marker had been listed as female since she first got her driver’s license in her teens. She goes further to say that it “[h]asn’t really been a problem” throughout her life. Hunter explained that she posted the video in order to show the reality of the current situation of the U.S., rather than to receive sympathy or instill fear upon those who may be affected in the future. 

She also said, “It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness, however it does make life a little harder.”

Furthermore, she expressed that she doesn’t really mind the “M” on her passport, because it doesn’t define who she is. However, it is bothersome because this will force her to unnecessarily out herself to border patrol officers every time she travels, which she would really rather not do. She also added that she is worried that this is just the beginning and that more discriminatory actions can be directed toward the LGBTQ+ community. 

It can be gathered that the government has a large role in this situation. Recently, many rights and freedoms have been endangered. For example, immigrant rights, reproductive freedom, and trans justice have been threatened by the government. Judging by the recent situation with Hunter Schafer, it can be inferred that the government is moving forward with plans that will have a negative effect on people.
