Bronny James scores his first NBA bucket in Lakers loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In the second half, the Cleveland Cavaliers were cruising towards a 134-110 win against the Los Angeles Lakers to become 6-0 for the first time since 2016. Instead of the Cleveland crowd rooting for the other team, rookie Bronny James, son of LeBron James, was getting cheered on by Cleveland fans, chanting, “We want Bronny,” halfway through the 3rd quarter. The chant had picked back up midway through the 4th quarter.
Lakers coach JJ Redick subbed Bronny in the game for only the second regular season game of his early career. This time around, he got his first NBA basket, scoring a 14 foot step back with about 2 minutes left remaining in the 4th quarter. Bronny said “it was insane” after scoring 2 points, with 2 assists and 1 steal in just 5 minutes. He also said that he was not anticipating that at all, and says the chants really got to him. Even with him having a straight face while the chants were going on, he said it was a real special moment. Bronny said that it felt really nice hearing the chants, especially coming from the Cleveland crowd.
Bronny’s dad, LeBron James, says that his son would have been better than he would have been in a situation like that: “An unbelievable moment for him, first of all. For our family, it’s just pretty cool to be a part of it.” The last time Bronny had played in a regular season game this year was opening night, subbing him in with his father in the second quarter. He ended up shooting the ball only twice but went 0-2 this time around, scoring his first points with his dad watching from the sideline and his Grandmother, Gloria, sitting in the stands with a Lakers hat as she watched another generation compete in the family business.
It was a really nice experience for Bronny to get his first ever points as a NBA player as the Cleveland Cavalier fans chant his name as he stepped onto the court.
