Politicians said that the decreased social interaction among students and the lack of concentration are the reasons behind smartphone bans in schools. Following, CBC News states, “But as the bans gain global momentum along with confusion about how they will be enforced and criticism about lack of consistency, some researchers say there isn’t enough evidence on whether they’re actually effective.” Implementing cell phone bans during school time has already infected countries and states. So far, Italy, Spain, and Albania have enforced the cell phone ban. The recent countries formed into the prohibition in 2024 are Netherlands, Hungary, and France, including Greece, while the ones in the process are Belgium, Finland, and Ireland.
The opening school year of 2024 of Manville High School is when they commenced the ban. MHS abided with the other New Jersey school districts: “Some New Jersey school districts have issued policies requiring students to surrender their phones or drop them into a bag while on the premises. Other policies authorize district administrators to seize them.” During the conversations among administrators, the topic of the cell phone ban had crossover after the negative results of cellphone use in school both academically and behaviorally. The final decision was made by the superintendent of schools, while principals developed the grade-level appropriate guidelines, enforcing a district-wide cellphone ban.
Based on the form given by administrations, the reasons behind the ban of using cell phones during school were caused from lack of face-to-face social interactions, student distractions during lectures, social media impact that caused HIB reports and other misconduct incidents. Not only that, HIB reports partially take the form of cyberbullying in social media that followed the taking and posting images and video contents.
