On April 17th, 2024, a protest was held in the country of Georgia.
On that Tuesday, hundreds of thousands of Georgian citizens rallied in the capitol to stop the president from passing a new Russian law; many have compared the protest to another protest that happened in Hong Kong in late 2019 and early 2020. This law would allow the Russian government to see all of the funds that were going in and out of Georgia. Due to this, the European Union has told the Georgian government that if they pass this law they will not be allowed to join the E.U.
Many people have speculated the reason for passing this law. The main theory is that a billionaire named Bidzina Ivanishvili has control over his government due to the fact that he has more money than the Georgian government. He also has many businesses in Russia and has been making many of the government decisions for the past couple of years.
There was also an attack on one of the congress members during the meeting, resulting in a huge fight in the courthouse. Over 10,000 people were surrounding the courthouse chanting for congress not to pass the law. It got so bad that the Georgian Military riot police had to be called to contain the situation.
So, do you think that this law will be passed and Georgia will have no future with the European Union, or will the government change their mind and possibly have a future in the E.U.?
