On March 26th, 2024, a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge. There was live footage of the ship slowly going toward the bridge. It is extremely sad this has happened, and it was not on purpose either. The loss of the bridge has cut off transportation and left many people in very difficult situations. This event was extremely sad and unpredictable.

The container ship had lost power in the river and then slowly edged toward the support beams of the bridge. Many people recorded this as the ship crashed into the beams. The bridge crashed down, and everything became very dark. Six people are presumed to be dead as a result of this freak accident. According to CNN, it was 6 bridge workers that lost their lives in this accident. The captain of the ship stated through a message that everyone on board the ship was safe, so we can at least be grateful for some lives that survived. The crew was able to give a mayday signal, which gave authorities enough time to stop traffic. If not for the mayday, the amount of lives lost would have been much higher than it was. Things currently being investigated are if the bridge was sturdy enough; if there were never any issues reported; and that the ship truly lost power.

The governor stated that night that everything turned out to be a sad conclusion. But, now we must look to rebuild. The governor said that he and his office were in close communication with all people executing rescue operations and he had a close grasp with everything that was happening. The governor stated that the architecture of the bridge is very complex. This means the reconstruction of the bridge could take anywhere from 8 months to a year or more. This bridge is a crucial point in Baltimore, as it is connected to a port. Transporting goods is very important, so getting this bridge back up and running is very important, too. About 11.3 million people drive on this bridge a year, which is 31,000 a day. This bridge needs to be rebuilt as fast as possible. When a crucial part of infrastructure is destroyed or lost, it is almost always rebuilt. The government and people of Baltimore are working hard to rebuild what was lost. The families of the ones who were lost, we are all very sorry for your tragic losses. Now is a time to mourn, grief, rebuild, and find out how maybe this could have been stopped.
