Somerset County Wrestling Tournament

On Saturday, January 8th, Franklin High School held the Somerset County Wrestling Tournament. There were 13 teams at the county tournament. Manville was one of the smallest towns at the tournament but they were ready to put up a good fight. The Mustangs were going into the tournament led by their captain, Brandon Flores and he did not disappoint this tournament.

Brandon Flores made it to the finals at the 138-pound weight class where he would go up against a wrestler from Somerville. Brandon would go on to win the match by a decision with the final score being 10-4. With that win, Brandon was named the Somerset county 138 pound champion. At the 106-pound weight class, Bridgewater wrestler, Logan Levine won over Hillsborough 4-1. At 113, Joe Aldrich from Somerville pinned Pingry and he was named the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. At 120 pounds, Sean Markey from Bound Brook won his match via pin over a Watchung wrestler to win the county championship. At the 126-pound weight class, Tim Kolshhorn from Ridge won his match in a 9-2 decision over a wrestler from Bernards. At the 132-pound weight class, Bridgewater’s, Daniel Smith tech fell to his opponent by the score of 18-2. At 144-pounds Somerville’s, Jaimen Bryant won his match by decision over Belvidere 6-4. At 150, Bound Brook’s, Alexander Martinez pinned Somerville in 1 minute and 58 seconds. In the 157-pound weight class, Harry Liu of Watchung Hills won his match by a major decision by the final score of 17-7 over Bridgewater. At the 165-pound weight class, Pingry’s Jack Martin pinned Somerville in 1 minute and 11 seconds. In the 175-pound division, Hillsborough’s Joseph Witcoski won by a decision by the final score of 5-1 over Watchung Hills. At 190, Jake Fern from Ridge pinned Hillsborough in 4 minutes and 26 seconds. In the 215 division, Matt Jones from Hillsborough won by a 3-2 decision over Ridge. Lastly, at heavyweight, Christian Quandt from Hillsborough pinned Bernards in 2 minutes and 26 seconds. The winner of the Somerset County Tournament was Hillsborough and they had 3 county champion wrestlers.
