Manville Football Gives The Town A Much Needed Win

Justin Petti

Manville football was not playing for themselves this past week on September 10th, they were playing for their town and the hard times everyone is going through.

To highlight some key parts of the game, Dunellen attempted an onside kick which was recovered by Manville’s, Nick Bentz, junior. Two plays later, Manville junior, Shawn Purcell, ran for a 51-yard touchdown! The Mustangs would go on to stop the destroyer’s offense.

On the first play of the second drive for the Mustangs, Purcell ran for a 56-yard touchdown. After the field goal was made, the Mustangs were up 14-0. On the third drive for the Mustangs, Quarterback Danny Wildgoose threw to Purcell, stretching his body, he made an incredible one-handed catch for a 33-yard touchdown. That put the Mustangs up 21-0 halfway through the first quarter.

The Mustangs would go on to win the game 48-6. Wildgoose threw for 59 yards on 4 attempts and had two touchdowns. He also contributed with 6 tackles along with Jeffery Mathis with 6 as well. Purcell had 165 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards. Purcell had over 200 scrimmage yards and 4 touchdowns. Senior, Brandon Flores, had 9 rushes for 53 yards and one touchdown. Junior, Ethan Mullins, had 3 rushes for 11 yards and a touchdown. Junior, Alex Orzol, had one catch for 21 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, the Mustangs were led by Junior, Allan Ambrose with 7 tackles. 2 blocked punts by junior, Ryan Oset followed with multiple fourth-down stops by the entire Mustang team, which was a key reason in dominating the game as the Destroyers only had 2 first downs the entire game.

This was the first time the Mustangs have won their opening game since 2006. The Mustangs really played their hearts out on the field Friday night against the Dunellen Destroyers, making it an unforgettable and spirited start of the season.
