John Basilone’s Pride is Still Remembered Today

John Basilone, born on November 4, 1916, is the sixth of ten children was sadly killed in action on February 1945. He is still honored today for his heroism on the battlefield. John Basilone was an United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant, who died protecting his nation during World War II. His legacy is still thought of today and is honored in his statue located in Raritan, New Jersey. John Basilone was one of the 3,524 people to receive the highest US military decoration, which is given to those who go above and beyond the call of duty. John Basilone was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 24 and 25, 1942, at the Battle of Guadalcanal for his courageous actions.

“Why did John Basilone receive the Medal of Honor” you may ask? Well, he was touring the country, encouraging people to buy war bonds, and had high hopes as a movie star. But he decided to head back into the hell that is war. This Sunday, the 22 of September in Raritan, New Jersey, John Basilone will be honored with a parade in his name, as we all remember his bravery in the battlefield.
